The Role of Pragmatic Competence in Second Language Acquisition

Abstract

Pragmatic competence, the ability to use language appropriately in social and cultural contexts, plays a crucial role in second language acquisition (SLA). While traditional language instruction often emphasizes grammar and vocabulary, the importance of pragmatic skills is increasingly recognized in helping learners navigate real-world communication. This article explores the role of pragmatic competence in developing effective communicative abilities in second language learners. It reviews the theoretical foundations of pragmatics in language use and presents empirical studies showing how pragmatic failures can lead to miscommunication. The article also discusses methods for teaching pragmatic competence, such as the integration of cultural learning and authentic language use in classroom settings.
