Abstract

Latin has been the foundation of medical terminology, yielding consistency and accuracy to language and geography. With the evolution of contemporary medicine, though much of the traditional Latin has been replaced by English words, weakening a previously universal language of medicine. This article explores Latin in the history of medicine with a focus on lost terms previously important in describing Anatomy, the classification of disease, and the medicine. By making comparisons between these lost terms and their modern equivalents, we investigate the impact of language change upon medical education and practice.
